A picture of the DI prototype #120029, in June 1935.
The description of this picture includes some assumption and educated guesses on my part...All that the captions say from my source is "Model D and controls for Caterpillar Trailer Patrol road scraper. June 1935."
This tractor has many industrial features-extended controls (clutch, throttle), extended drawbar (with U shape, instead of flat agricultural type), and the Dual Power Control with side seat assembly.
But the tractor is green and the fuel tank says "Model D" right? I think it is the DI prototype #120029. The prototype was used for "field tests" or road tests by the Black Hawk County Road Department in June 1935. Since the tests were successful, in August of 1935 specifications of the DI were set. Why isn't the tractor yellow? According to Forty-Twenty.com "On August 28, 1935... It was decided that the Model DI was to be painted "Highway Yellow"-after this picture was taken...
