A 440I gas, #449404. Sure, its painted the wrong color, but that's OK! It is equipped with an Auburn Trencher-a rather complicated piece of equipment! Notice the weights on the front of the tractor.

Here is a description of how it works, from the tractor's owner:

"The trencher is PTO driven.
There is a gear box mounted on the rear of the tractor where the normal PTO would be. The trencher is bolted directly to the rear axle and a real pain to remove. I had to remove it and have two gears made for the gearbox mentioned above. Three months of searching could not locate any replacement any where in the world.

To move the tractor, when trenching, the power is taken from the gearbox on the trencher and feed back into the tractor transmission at a greatly reduced speed. This 440 and trencher would be an absolute guaranteed winner at a "slow" race contest.

The trencher has its own separate hydraulic system. The trenching assembly is raised and lowered with a hydraulic cylinder and a special roller chain pulley system. It will go from vertical straight up to straight down."
